2 Day Advanced GPS Mapping Workshop

Course Description

Day 1

GPS Mapping for GIS - Data Collection Refresher/Basic & Advanced (1/2 day)
Basic GPS data collection for GIS consists of mapping point, line and area features. A number of advanced techniques can be used to improved accuracies as well as increase productivity. These various techniques will be detailed in class, demonstrated in the field and the resulting data reviewed in Pathfinder Office software. This is an ideal workshop for experienced GPS mapping personnel that have not previously received formal Trimble Certified training or for those in need of a ‘refresher’. The program is a good mix of class lecture and field exercises with plenty of field time for all important ‘skills development’.

Advanced Pathfinder Office - DGPS/Data Editing/Exports (1/2 day)
The concepts of differentially correcting GPS data collected for GIS mapping will be reviewed along with differential correction sources (CORS, RTCM, and WAAS) and expected accuracies. Pathfinder Office differential correction settings will be discussed in detail including the benefits of using ‘Super-correct’ options to re-process data to improve results. In addition, advanced export utilities (customizable ASCII) and data editing functions (SSF Editor) will be presented. This fast paced workshop is designed with the experienced GPS user in mind and is not a good ‘introductory’ course.

Day 2

GIS Data Maintenance (1 day)
Geographic Information Systems are built, not bought and as they begin to mature, keeping the data up to date and current takes on a more significant role. This workshop will provide hands on experience in the GIS data collection/maintenance cycle. Attendees will learn how to design data structures suitable for collection and future maintenance, extracting existing data from a database, re-locate a feature in the field, confirm or modify the feature attributes and/or positions and re-integrate the modifications back into the GIS.

Note – Experienced Users Only! This workshop is designed for personnel with experience in GPS mapping that presently use ESRI products (ArcView 3.x & ArcGIS) and Trimble’s Pathfinder Office software.
